Vienna is a very classy city - ornately decorated with gold, marble, and statues everywhere. Probably the best example of the gilded age. Or put more simply, it's totally old school. (And naturally sexist - even the state orchestra only hires men.)

Salzburg is a quaint waste. It has two claims to fame - Mozart and The Sound of Music - and it milks them both shamelessly. Don't expect touch-tone telephones or any businesses (even restaurants) to be open on Sunday, although you can always buy "chocolate Mozart balls."
